CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION UPDATE

Nov. 8, 2023

The CDC recommends the 2023–2024 updated COVID-19 vaccines: Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, or Novavax, to protect against serious illness from COVID-19. These vaccines target the XBB lineage of the Omicron variant and are designed to provide enhanced protection.

COVID-19 VACCINE RECOMMENDATIONS

Everyone aged 5 years and older:

  • Should receive 1 dose of an updated COVID-19 vaccine (Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, or Novavax) to stay protected against serious illness from COVID-19.
  • None of the updated 2023-2024 COVID-19 vaccines is preferred over another.

Children aged 6 months–4 years:

  • Multiple doses required, including at least 1 updated dose.
  • Schedule varies based on the vaccine type and previous vaccination status.
  • Children may receive a different vaccine type after the first or second dose in some situations.

People Aged 12 Years and Older Who Are Not Vaccinated:

  • 1 dose of updated Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine, OR
  • 2 doses of updated Novavax vaccine (second dose 8 weeks after the first).

People aged 12 years and older who are not vaccinated:

  • Should get either 1 updated Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, OR
  • 2 doses of the updated Novavax COVID-19 vaccine.

People who are moderately or severely immunocompromised:

  • Additional doses of updated COVID-19 vaccine may be required.
  • Consult with healthcare providers for personalized advice.

Special Considerations:

  • People who previously received the Johnson & Johnson/Janssen COVID-19 vaccine: Should get 1 updated COVID-19 vaccine.
  • For Those Recently Recovered from COVID-19: Consider delaying vaccination by 3 months, depending on personal risk factors and local COVID-19 conditions.
